Hermit Profile
Biography
The Silent Oracle has not spoken in eleven years. This is not, he has indicated through a sophisticated system of written notes and deliberate pauses, a disability. It is a discipline. He arrived at silence after a career as an interpreter at international negotiations — a role in which he became convinced that most of what was said would have been better left unsaid, and that the most consequential decisions were made in the spaces between words. He has spent the subsequent decade refining those spaces into an art form, and his silences are now considered by connoisseurs to be among the most communicative available in Western Europe.
The Silent Oracle does not offer predictions in any conventional sense. He offers what he calls "prophetic silences" — extended periods of wordless attention directed at a particular question, a particular person, or a particular view from a particular window, after which he provides a single written note. The notes are invariably brief (rarely more than seven words), frequently inscribed in a script he has developed himself, and occasionally in languages that have not been identified. Estate guests who have received his notes report a range of reactions, from profound clarity to mild existential crisis, both of which The Silent Oracle considers acceptable outcomes.
Currently engaged at a private estate in the Scottish borders until the autumn equinox, The Silent Oracle is accepting enquiries for the following season. He will consider only estates with significant horizon lines, preferably elevated positions with views of not less than twenty miles, and owners who can demonstrate in writing that they genuinely understand what they are requesting. He has returned three estate applications without comment. He returned a fourth with a single word written across it: "No." The applicant has asked that the word be framed, and The Silent Oracle has not objected.

Estate Testimonials
"He spent three days sitting in our east-facing library. On the fourth day he left a note on the mantelpiece. It said: 'The painting is a copy.' It was. We have not discussed how he knew."— Name withheld, Argyll
"Our guests now refer to before The Oracle and after The Oracle as distinct periods in the life of the estate. His engagement transformed not just the atmosphere but the character of the conversations we have here, which are better and considerably shorter."— Viscount Caradoc, Caradoc Hall, Brecon
